WHAT IS KANBAN? AND WHY KANBAN?
Kanban was developed by Taiichi Ohno, at Toyota. He was looking for a smart but simple inventory management system that would allow a high level of production to be achieved. The concept is therefore widely used in lean manufacturing and just-in-time production to control the logistic production chain.
The word Kanban is a composite of the Japanese kan 'visual' and ban 'card or board'. Using a board and cards, you can signal when something is needed. Besides in the production chain, you can therefore apply it in all kinds of areas to organize things.
The Kanban method is an effective tool to support the management of a production system as a whole. It is also an excellent way to start improvements / kaizen. This is because problem areas and bottlenecks emerge as soon as the number of physical or digital kanban cards in circulation, and therefore the amount of work in progress, is reduced.
KANBAN TWO-BIN SYSTEM
Kanban can be applied in a variety of ways. A simple example of this in provisioning, is the "two bin system" also known as "Two Bin". In a first bin lies the working stock that is used for production. A second bin holds a reserve supply. As soon as the first bin is empty, one removes the kanban from the bin. This is used as a signal for restocking. The second bin now slides or rolls forward. Once restocking has taken place, the system is balanced again. As soon as the second bin is empty, restocking begins again using the kanban card that is always in the bin.
