what is a flow rack?
A flow rack is a storage rack with roller tracks. Flow racks have been developed for boxes, crates and bins. The flow rack is extremely versatile and therefore suitable for various processes, such as the order picking, assembly and assembly industry. Flow racks are widely used at wholesalers, production companies, web shops and companies active in e-fulfillment.
Flow rack operation
A flow rack makes clever use of gravity. Roller beds are mounted at an angle, so that boxes, crates and goods automatically roll on to the lowest point against an end stop. This is also known as the picking side.
The slope depends on the product carrier and the type of roller rail. The following applies: the lighter the product carrier, the steeper the slope. The intention is that a box slowly rolls forward when refilling in an empty channel. And when removing the first box in a filled channel, the next boxes should roll forward on their own. Is that the case? Then the correct slope board has been reached! Usually that means a slope of 3 to 6 degrees
Recommended angle of inclination is 3 to 6 degrees.

Flow rack with box tilt presentation
A flow rack with a straight structure and angled distribution has been developed for maximum storage capacity. With this variant, there is sufficient gripping space between the levels, for example for completely removing boxes and trays or for grabbing products from the front.

Flow rack with angled presentation
This type of flow rack is characterized by a bent dispensing point. As a result, the grip opening is larger, which is ideal for order picking of individual items from a carton or container.

Flow rack with staggered picking levels
If a flow rack is located behind a roller conveyor or table, staggered picking levels offer a solution. After all, the gripping distance is reduced in this way. This overhanging dispensing can be realized both sloping and staggered.

Flow rack with staggered construction
The dispensing side of this type of flow rack is staggered. This creates more gripping space, especially in combination with the bent dispensing. This setup is particularly suitable for the ergonomic picking of large items. The depth varies by level.

For collecting articles from outer cartons, staggered picking levels always offers the largest gripping opening. A straight flow frame under a dispensing tray is not recommended due to the limited grip opening.
By staggering the dispensing side, more gripping space is created, certainly in combination with bent dispensing platforms. This setup is especially suitable for the ergonomic picking of large items from the outer carton or container.
Choose a roller conveyor bed or separate channels?
The use of a channel separation provides an overview and prevents picking errors. However, it also works as a brake with cardboard boxes or polystyrene foam containers. Depending on the product carriers and the desired flexibility, you can opt for flat roller tracks, possibly provided with channel separation or a roller track with flanged wheels.

Channel Separation Offset
The most commonly used variant for channel separation in flow racks is this plastic profile. It is suitable for almost all boxes and KLT containers.

Channel seperation straight
This is a plastic profile with an upright side close to the roller rail. That edge offers just the right guidance for small storage bins.
Channel separation offset (conical)
Is there a flow rack with conical containers? Then space between the profiles is necessary and offset channel separation offers a solution.
Tube guide
If the flow rack is used for heavy bins and boxes, then tube guidance is recommended.
Roller conveyor
This variant offers minimal friction and is suitable for light polystyrene containers.
